The 9th Ohio Cavalry saw action in the Knoxville Campaign, the Siege of Atlanta, Battle of Lovejoy"s Station, Sherman"s March to the Sea, Carolinas Campaign and the Battle of Bentonville. Initially organized at Zanesville on October 3, 1862, the 9th was mustered out of service August 2, 1865, at Lexington, NC.
The 35th Ohio Infantry was organized at Hamilton, Ohio, and was mustered in for three years on September 20, 1861, under the command of Col. Ferdinand Van Derveer. The 35h was mustered out of service at Chattanooga, TN, August 26 - September 28, 1864. The 35th saw action at the Battles of Mills Springs, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca and Kennesaw Mountain as well as the Sieges of Corinth, Chattanooga and Atlanta.
John H. Garner was a soldier in both the 9th and the 35th.
Archive of three TLS, one document, various sizes, five covers involving Garner"s attempt to apply for his Civil War pension, something that apparently was never completed, very possibly due to Garner"s lackadaisical attitude as illustrated by his attorney"s obvious frustration in his letters.
H.D. Phillips of Washington, DC, expresses frustration. In one letter, Phillips writes: "...The applicant blames the Bureau, blames the attorney and blames everybody for not getting his money...Very much of this delay is caused by the claimant..." In another, Phillips writes to Garner: "...This evidence has been repeatedly called for and you should furnish same as soon as possible."
