Taking in the best Europe has to offer by train is becoming a more and more popular pursuit. People love the fact that they can conduct a holiday at a leisurely pace, without having to wear themselves out by driving all of the time. Once you are in your seat, looking out of the window, you can relax until you reach your destination. For many travellers however, the train journey can be the main focus of the journey. With great quality trains, and some truly stunning scenery to take in, it can be a fantastic way to travel. Here we look at a few of our favourite journeys through Europe.

Cinque Terre – Levanto to La Spezia, Italy

Can there be a rail line more spectacular than this? We’re talking about five, beautiful Italian towns, with highly colourful and traditional houses like only the Italians design. The journey is only around 12 miles long, but in this short space of time, you will see some of the most beautiful scenery Italy has to offer. Look out for epic views out across the turquoise seas, and rolling olive groves and vineyards as a backdrop to your train window!

Centovalli Railway – Locarno in Italy and Domodossola in Switzerland

Staying in part with Italy, we have another wonderfully beautiful rail line which has to be seen to be believed. It’s known as the ‘Hundred Valley’ railway thanks to the wonderful route it takes, meandering between waterfalls, beautiful groves of chestnuts, beautiful verdant landscapes and on to a wonderful experience of the breathtaking Alps. You can look forward to sweeping across the Sorno Viaduct, and encountering the gorge which links Re and Intragna. This two hour journey is well worth taking in as part of your European train holiday.

Munich in Germany to Innsbruck in Austria

This is another rail line journey that takes us from one country to another. Part of the appeal of this type of journey is the changes in scenery from one country to the next, and this journey is no exception. This eye wateringly beautiful route will take you past shimmering lakes, wonderful views of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, as well as some other fabulous mountain scenery as you enter Austria. It's a wonderful train journey that has to be on your itinerary.

The Glacier Express – Zermatt to St Moritz in Switzerland

This sounds like something out of a fairytale, and if you take in this rail line you may ask yourself whether you have indeed been transported into another realm. As you work your way from one side of the Alps to the other, you will be witnessing the dazzling slopes of the Swiss Alps at their best. It’s a truly inspiring and spectacular site, and is a must see for any keen skier. For anyone with a serious interest in the area, the Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt is well worth a visit. This journey is a full 7 hours, but has to be one of the best ways to see the Alps.
