We all know that Russia is the largest country in the world in terms of area, but how many of you know the smallest country in the world. I bet most of you don’t know about it. That’s why in this article, I am going to provide the top six lists of smallest countries in the world!

1) Vatican City

Vatican City

 The Vatican City which is located in a walled enclave in the city of Rome is the smallest country in the world in terms of both areas and population. With an estimated number of 840 people as occupants and 0.44 sq. km area, the Vatican City is even smaller than most of the small cities in the world. The Vatican City is being ruled by Pope, the Bishop of Rome for many centuries now. With catholic Christians serving as higher authorities in the Vatican City, it serves as the guardian of Christianity.


2) Monaco

 Monaco which is also called as the Principality of Monaco is the world’s second smallest country with an area of 1.95 sq. km. Monaco is located on French Riviera in the Western Europe and it is surrounded by France on three sides and Mediterranean Sea on the other side. Although the country contains a small land mass, an estimated number of 36136 people are living in Monaco making them one of the most densely populated countries in the world as well.

3) Nauru

 Nauru which is formerly known as the Pleasant Island is the third smallest country in the world. The country which is being officially called as the Republic of Nauru covers just only 21.2 sq. km is located on Micronesia in the South Pacific. With an estimated population of just 9,378, Naura also lists in the world’s least-populated countries in the second place next to Vatican City.

 Tuvalu which is formerly known as the Ellice Islands gets the fourth spot in the list of world’s smallest countries. This island nation similar to Nauru, is located in the Pacific Ocean but in the Polynesian region. Tuvalu covers just 26 sq. km area and has 11,200 inhabitants. The country was under the control of British until 1978 under different colonies, but finally became independent on October 1, 1978. Tuvalu is also a member of United Nations from September 5, 2000.

5) San Marino

San Marino

 San Marino which is also known as Most Serene Republic of San Marino is the fifth smallest country in the world located Apennine Mountains of the Italian Peninsula. The country which is being officially called as the Republic of San Marino is surrounded by Italy on all sides and covers just over 61 sq. km area and 30,000 inhabitants. The country claims to be oldest surviving republic country in the world from 3 September 301, although there are fewer documents to prove it.

6) Liechtenstein

 Liechtenstein which is officially called as the Principality of Liechtenstein gets the sixth spot in the list of world’s smallest countries. The country is surrounded by Switzerland on two sides and Austria on the other two sides making it a doubly landlocked country in Europe. Liechtenstein is also the only country located fully in the Alps mountain region. Although the country covers a small area of 160 sq. km, it is one of the richest countries in the Europe. Liechtenstein also has the lowest external debt and unemployment rate in the world.
