Derek Scholte (1973), is an assemblage artist from The Netherlands. He creates artworks with old and vintage materials, found in the streets, flea markets, dumpsters and thrift shops.

From an early age the weekly visits to the flea market created a spark for junk and old stuff that led to creating the current style of artwork.

The love for old stuff together with the love for dystopian films, for instance the movies from directors like Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Tim Burton have had a great impact on Derek Scholte work.

The objects depict a dystopian society where the majority of men need to create their own necessities with scrap materials, just to survive.

The Japanese philosophy Wabi-sabi plays a big part in the look and feel of the objects. Wabi-sabi celebrates the beauty that comes with age. The imperfections and wear create a patina that adds to the beauty of an object. Rust, cracks, torn pieces and visible repairs show the previous life of an object.
